Chapter 9 analyses the situation of succession to the ICSID Convention, which is an example of a special category of treaties creating international organizations. In this section, it will be shown that there is no automatic succession to the membership of an international organization and that, accordingly, the practice of new States has been to adhere to the organization (and become party to the Convention) via a formal application.
