Chapter 2 Theoretical framework: deservingness, policy feedback and policy responsiveness
Restricted access

Chapter 2 elaborates further on the contents of and the interrelations between the three major social science theories that make up the heuristic model that was presented in Chapter 1: welfare deservingness, policy responsiveness and policy feedback. The first part of the chapter focuses on the core framework of the book, namely, deservingness theory. Throughout the discussion of the different components and relationships in the deservingness model, it is argued that the model needs more of two seemingly separated but in fact closely related things: conceptual clarification and empirical examination. After that, the deservingness model is linked to the perspectives of policy feedback and policy responsiveness to clarify why and how popular deservingness opinions and welfare state policies interact.
