Chapter 10 concludes by summarizing the book’s most important contributions to the literature. For each contribution, we highlight some of the main findings and their implications, but also identify remaining knowledge gaps and offer promising paths for future research. The book makes at least three much needed contributions to the literature on popular welfare deservingness. First, it brings greater conceptual clarification to the welfare deservingness framework by introducing a number of conceptual distinctions that have, for the most part, remained invisible in previous research. Second, the book brings more empirical examination to the welfare deservingness framework by embarking on several hitherto underexplored empirical pathways. Third, the book brings popular deservingness opinions closer to the institutional context in which they take shape by studying their relationship with welfare state policies.
