Chapter 3 Spiritual leadership: a new paradigm for a new normal
Restricted access

Spiritual leadership (SL) focusses on compassion, fairness, kindness and a genuine interest in other people. It involves teamwork, nurturing the best in everyone to deliver excellence for all; strengths and individuality are seen as important and equal. Personified by a leader's interest in and care for other people, general kindness and goodness of spirit, SL aligns with compassionate, collective, ethical, selfless and servant leaderships. Leaders share concern for humanity and the world we live in and this dovetails into leading for sustainability and a desire to make the world a better place. Far from being 'new age' rhetoric, SL makes a real difference to employees' motivation, work ethic, productivity and feelings of satisfaction due to being valued, and working towards a higher purpose. Not only does spiritual leadership respect and treat people as they would wish to be treated, but it also results in a stronger and more effective workforce.
