Chapter 1 An equity-minded research agenda for leadership learning and development in higher education
Restricted access

This introductory chapter presents foundational contexts and framing essential to contemporary leadership education through an equity-oriented lens. Key constructs such as leadership studies, development, and leadership education are differentiated. In this chapter, we examine the importance of context in leadership education in higher education environments and suggest how forces of colonization, segregation, racialization, and erasure cast shadows on contemporary leadership learning and development. The chapter concludes with a call to center social justice in leadership education and research.
