Restricted access

The purpose of this chapter is to inform a leadership education research agenda that promotes liberatory pedagogy in leadership education. It reviews with a critical lens research related to pedagogical tools and experiences commonly used in leadership education in higher education. The chapter begins with an introduction to liberatory pedagogy and then reviews pedagogy in the following categories: leadership literature; discussion and dialogue; reflection; simulations; community immersion; mentoring; and practice-based experiences. Following a discussion of themes, gaps, tensions, and controversies in the existing literature, recommendations are offered for research to advance the use of liberatory pedagogy in leadership education.
