Chapter 14 The EU as a good global actor in international economic relations: the role of parliaments

This chapter evaluates how the European Parliament contributes to the shaping of the EU's identity in international economic relations. It presents the rationale for ensuring a strong position of the European Parliament in the common commercial policy and evaluates the contribution of the European Parliament toward shaping the EU's trade and investment policies. Furthermore, the chapter considers areas of potential future development of the European Parliament's role in the common commercial policy, by focusing the process of formulating the EU's long term external economic policies and the implementation of the EU's deep and comprehensive economic agreements. Finally, the chapter considers the role of national parliaments in ensuring democratic legitimacy of the EU's international trade and investment policies.
