Knowledge spillovers lie at the heart of innovation's contribution to long-term economic growth, and also have important implications for understanding firm behavior and formulating public policy. This chapter surveys the evidence on spillovers among firms, how spillovers interact with geography, and spillovers from scientific research to commercial innovation. It also briefly discusses the evidence on spillover mechanisms.
