Chapter 15 Cruise tourism development in China
Restricted access

This chapter presents an up-to-date overview of cruise tourism development in China. Specifically, the chapter reviews the evolution of cruise tourism development in China by briefly presenting the history of demand-side and supply-side developments. Leading cruise ports in China are examined and the profiles of Chinese cruise tourists are presented. The chapter also discusses the critical challenges and issues facing China’s cruise tourism development. Chinese cruise tourists tend to be well educated, in middle age or older, from a middle- to high-income family, and mostly from China’s first- and second-tier cities. They prefer cruise trips of less than a week. Royal Caribbean International (RCI), Costa Cruises, MSC Cruises, Princess Cruises and Genting Cruise Lines are the most popular cruise lines among Chinese cruise tourists. Chinese cruise tourists are most satisfied with cruise-related services, such as on-board food and beverages, accommodation and amusement, but least satisfied with off-shore attractions and activities.
