Chapter 21 Tourism safety and security

Safety and security are vitally important for tourism activities and tourism development. The chapter first reviews the evolution of tourism safety and security research in China in terms of the content themes. The literature shows that tourist safety issues include tourist safety cognition, tourists’ sense of safety, safety behaviours, safety management and safety factors. Tourism object safety issues include tourism resource safety, safety of tourist facilities and safety of tourism activities. Emergency management of safety accidents is identified as a key area of research. This area includes issues of prevention, monitoring and early warning, emergency rescue, and recovery. The chapter then discusses the future prospects of tourism safety and security in China.
