The Master in Advanced Studies (MAS) in Spatial Planning at ETH Zürich, Switzerland, is a two-year part-time continuing education programme for individuals already in employment. The programme aims to develop students’ interdisciplinary team working skills and prepare them for future leadership roles in the field of planning. This contribution elaborates on the pedagogies, demands on educators, challenges and how they can be addressed. The pedagogical approach adopted is problem-based and process-oriented; it purposefully incorporates the practical knowledge and prior professional experiences of student as well as their different disciplinary backgrounds in teaching and learning. In particular, the programme employs experimental simulations of negotiation processes and study projects based on real and unsolved planning issues at three different scales and contexts.
