Chapter 6 Leading academic departments
Restricted access

This chapter is based upon three fundamental axioms of leadership: it is contextual, relational and non-hierarchical. It then reviews the work context and distinctive characteristics of academics as “clever” people. From this, several leadership guidelines are outlined that can support success. A key challenge is to balance benevolent guardianship with discipline. For individuals the central task may be summarised as “be yourself, more, with skill”. This is a process that balances authentic self-expression with the need to connect successfully with others.
