Enabling the inclusion of newly joined faculty members in academic departments is an important aspect of effective onboarding management. The purpose of this chapter is to explore the lived experiences of new faculty members in an academic department and, more specifically, a business school environment during onboarding, as well as to understand how these experiences shaped their views on the extent to which they felt included and assimilated into their new environment. Qualitative data was collected from full-time faculty members appointed as permanent faculty members during the two-year period preceding the study at a South African business school. The chapter reports on critical incidents leading to positive experiences of inclusion as well as exclusion and proposes actions heads of departments can take to enable inclusive faculty onboarding in academic departments.
