Competition in relation to gas and electricity has been existing in the EU for only about two decades. Although competition in electricity markets had been introduced in Scandinavia and the United Kingdom in the 1980s already, this was very much the exception. In basically all continental EU countries, both the gas and electricity markets were legally protected markets dominated by a single national or regional electricity and/or gas company.
