Chapter 4 Transport
Restricted access

Transport plays a crucial role as an input into almost all economic sectors. It is the means of globally moving all trade in goods, as well as passengers. This sector is pivotal to achieving the European single market and to successfully integrating it into the global economy. The transport sector is also a very important economic activity in its own right. Transport services represent roughly 4-5% of the EU's Gross Value Added ('GVA'), employ 4-5% of its workforce, and equate to 10-15% of the consumption of EU households. This activity is nonetheless increasingly under scrutiny for its environmental impact, as transport also accounts for a quarter of the EU's greenhouse gas emissions.
