Open access

Civil society is a concept built in the western world, based on its historical and cultural references. There are political and practical implications for this concept, which unfolds into definitions of citizenship and access to a system of rights, as well as the recognition of forms considered representative of civil society. This chapter summarizes the mainstream understands of civil society, contrasting them with discussions and practices from the Global South, particularly Latin America. They are seen as two epistemic banks of a river, that need to be connected, in order to better respond to academic debates, policies and practices facing the planetary challenges of the 21st century.
