Chapter 5 Civic deviance and lawlessness: the aftermath of January 6, 2021
Open access

The attack on the capitol of the United States on January 6th included members from many deviant voluntary associations, far-right militants, and social non-conformists who stormed the capital attempting to assert a particular sort of government. This chapter aids scholars who seek to understand civil disobedience and deviance in the 21st Century and exposes the democratic backsliding present in the U.S. stemming from historical patterns of violence to resolve political and economic conflict. We focus on the role deviant voluntary associations played in the storming of the Capitol and the outsized role social media played in forming social capital bonds between those participating in the attack. We end with suggestions to better understand and counter incivility and violence as legitimate options for political groups.
