Chapter 16 Pro-social giving and reciprocity in the Global South
Open access

Various forms of pro-social giving play a significant role in providing resources for civil society in the Global South. This chapter offers an historiography of pro-social giving in two large regions, Africa and South Asia. It explores how pre-colonial indigenous traditions of giving intertwined but were never completely supplanted by Western missionary then colonising incursions. Attention is given to the roles of both horizontal and vertical giving and the Maussian concept of the reciprocity of the gift in both regions.
