Introduction

The world, or parts of it, has experienced political, social and economic turbulence in the past but this century has been marked by interacting trends and events which justify the description of an ‘era of turbulence’. The most marked of these have been the impact of continuous economic crisis from 2008 onwards, the growing threat of climate change, the growth of racism and racist organisations, rising levels of xenophobia and the associated growth of far-right nationalism, and the covid pandemic. This book, through eleven closely argued chapters from across the world, each covering one or more of these trends, tries to address what this era of turbulence means for the pursuit of social justice, that is the development of societies marked by fairness, respect for the identity and dignity of all, a commitment to the goal of more equal societies, and the abolition of poverty. The introduction to the book as a whole reviews key contextual factors and trends across the world, highlighting significant links between these aspects of turbulence and the need to respond both locally and globally to the threats they pose.
