Chapter 2 Survey fundamentals
Open access

Survey fundamentals briefly discusses the advantages and disadvantages of different methods of data collection (case studies, semi-structured surveys, and structured surveys). All components of structured questionnaire surveys are discussed, with an emphasis on how to translate research questions into survey questions and the factors that must be taken into consideration when developing the questionnaire and the implementation protocol. These factors include the target population and sampling method, the statistical model for analysis and the measurement level for variables, response rates, data quality, and question reliability and validity. The chapter shows how to estimate a calendar time budget and a financial budget for a survey, identifying budget line items for personnel and material costs. Budget examples are provided for a combined postal/online survey.
