Chapter 5 Survey implementation
Open access

Survey implementation requires careful preparation, attention to detail, and a clear understanding of the research questions, which determine the population of interest and the estimated realized sample size. The chapter discusses five activities to collect data from respondents: 1) selecting a survey method (postal, online, interview, etc.), 2) obtaining ethics approval where necessary and meeting confidentiality and open data requirements, 3) writing up a protocol to manage respondent selection and questionnaire delivery, 4) selecting respondents (identifying the target population, sampling methods (census, probability, and non-probability samples) and how to estimate the minimum sample size, and 5) delivering the questionnaire to sampled respondents (contacting respondents, incentives, and good follow-up practices.
