Conclusion: democratism, politics and science
Open access

The conclusion summarises the case for democratism, the limitations of the theory, and avenues to further research. It covers implications of democratism for the global decline of democracy within states, for the ways in which quantitative research on democracy may come to reflect politics beyond the state, and for conceptual and thematic next steps in research on democracy beyond the state. The conclusion also points to the possibility of extending the discussion of democracy outside IR and social science into the natural life sciences.
