Chapter 1 A global political economy
Full access

This introductory chapter says that the book deals with the interface between exchange and authority, the automaticity of free trade and the role of political directive. Liberals stress individualism and wealth while realists and nationalists focus on the power of the organic whole. This book, interdisciplinary and analytical, argues that wealth and power are complements. It says that international trade is regulated both by nation states and by global political entities such as the IMF, WTO, ASEAN and USMCA. The chapter then surveys and summarises the ten succeeding chapters.
