The Japanese approach of responsible management is based on creating harmonious relationships with stakeholders through long-term engagement. Maintaining such relationships requires bridging the gap in stakeholder requirements and both sides expect conciliatory (bottom-up) actions to ensure this. Balancing stakeholder values requires a long-term commitment and approach to align with different requirements. This can be summarised as the ‘enabling approach’. From the above perspective, responsible management places specific emphasis on the employment security of employees. In addition, large companies have undertaken long-term engagement with other stakeholders. Networks for cooperation for improving and correcting business practices are formed in the long run for win–win relationships. This chapter reviews the transition of ideas from the era when Japan was a feudalistic merchant society to its present modernisation of industry.
