Over the last few decades academia has changed dramatically. Increasing online presence of journals and enhanced exposure of academic researchers demand from every participant maximum effort to stay ahead of the game and to follow a structured and goal-oriented publishing approach. This is essential for building a reputation, and publishing in well-known journals is crucial for an academic career. To help early career researchers on their path to excellence, Chapter 13 takes common marketing theories and applies them to publishing in academia. It argues that researchers and research topics have a certain life cycle, which need to be matched, in order to publish successfully. Employing a literature review and a qualitative in-depth interview, the chapter identifies different phases of research topics and the careers of researchers. By merging both, it develops the Life Cycle of Academic Publishing (LCAP) model, which helps young researchers to structure their working practices and supports the publishing of papers.

What does relevance and impact in entrepreneurship mean, why should we care about making research relevant especially as early career researchers and which challenges do researchers face in order to realise impactful and relevant research? These are the questions raised in Chapter 1. The discussion helps us to understand and to distinguish the concepts of relevance and impact. Early career and leading researchers reflect on their tasks in both academic and non-academic worlds and are critically re-thinking the current ways of defining scholarly impact through well-known measurements. The authors suggest the encouragement of research that is meaningful for different target groups such as practitioners, academic organisations and wider society.
