This chapter discusses the managerial challenges that cultural heritage organizations currently face and how perhaps they (should) address them. After defining cultural heritage organizations and comparing them with other service organizations, the main managerial challenges cultural heritage organizations face will be illustrated and how management research is or could be deployed to explain how they are (and sometimes should be) dealt with is discussed. Particular attention is given to the distinctive or more salient managerial challenges of cultural heritage organizations, when compared with other cultural organizations or (service) organizations in general (e.g. Chiapello, 1994; Heskett, 1986).
