Chapter 38: Responsible job crafting
This chapter discusses how responsible management can be associated with job crafting, which captures individuals’ change of job boundaries to respond to personal needs. The chapter elaborates the concept of responsible job crafting, which is defined as managerial crafting of responsible practices to enhance a personal positive self-image by attempting to contribute to societal progress, in terms of stakeholder value, environmental sustainability and ethics. The chapter explains how job crafting and responsible management are intertwined because they satisfy similar individual needs. The chapter then illustrates three different forms of responsible job crafting. After, the chapter proposes that responsible job crafting is likely to result in enhanced positive consequences for individuals and organizations, comparatively to other forms of job crafting, but, simultaneously, entails higher risks. Indications are then provided for organizations to maximize the benefits of responsible job crafting while reducing its risks. The chapter concludes with indications for future research.
